Redlands football team kicked off SCIAC play on Saturday, Oct. 1, taking on rivals Occidental College. The Bulldogs scored early and often, making nine touchdowns en route to a 63-29 onslaught against the Tigers.
Redlands scored first to give the Bulldogs a 7-point lead five minutes into the first quarter, an advantage that quickly disappeared when Occidental scored a touchdown of their own about four minutes later.
After the Tigers scored that first touchdown, Redlands was in the driver’s seat for the rest of the game. They scored two more touchdowns, bringing the score to 20-7. After Occidental made a touchdown and a two-point conversion to bring the scoreboard to 20-15, the Bulldogs proceeded to score 36 unanswered points to put the game out of reach for Occidental. The Tigers scored two touchdowns of their own to bring the score to 56-29, but the game was nearly over at that point. The Bulldogs drove home their win with one more touchdown to bring the final score to 63-29.
All night long, the Bulldogs put in work to seal their win. Redlands rushed for 462 yards- a new school record. The main contributor to that tally was junior running back Alex Andrighetto, who gained 144 yards on the ground, accompanied by two touchdowns. But he was not alone in his efforts. Five different players scored at least one rushing touchdown and 13 players earned rushing yards in the game.
Redlands certainly started SCIAC play on the right foot, and will hopefully continue their winning streak with their next SCIAC game against University of La Verne on Oct. 8.
