A statue of Deacon, the University of Redlands first ever Bulldog mascot was unveiled Wednesday at 12:30. The Maroon and Grey Student Ambassadors came up with the idea for the statue and began fundraising starting at homecoming and through December. Donations were made from alumni and students in each class in order to provide the university with a physical mascot that will last through the ages, as the school’s beloved live Bulldogs come and go. Senior and Co-President of Maroon and Grey, Taryn Sall introduced the statue at the unveiling ceremony which was equipped with hotdogs from JoJo’s Grill-a-Dog, provided by alumni Ryan Molnar of 2015. Senior and Maroon and Grey Co-President Evan Sanford unveiled the Bulldog statue, along with his classmates, Maroon and Grey Public Relations chair Erik Chazin and New Member Chair Kayla Wobschall.
The statue is dedicated to University of Redlands Class of 2017, however, the statue will serve as a symbol for all students of the U of R across past and future generations. Sanford, who helped make the dream of the statue a reality, said that he hopes that the statue helps create more traditions on campus.
“It’s really great that we have this [statue] for future generations of bulldogs,” Sanford said. “It provides an opportunity for alumni to come back and reminisce on fond memories they had as a student of the U of R.”
